Cherishing Your Closets
If you think about it, the most versatile, and impressive, part of any house are the Closets. Yeah, we don't spend a lot of time in them and yes, we don't exactly show them off to our friends, but darn, do they make or break any house. When you look at an open house you automatically look to see if it has enough closet space. When remodels are done they are typically done with the idea of adding more closets and shelving. Without closets all of our embarrassing stuff would be out in the rooms for all to to see. Luckily, no one will judge your parachute pants when they are safely tucked away in your closet.
As you grow older you tend to appreciate Closets more and more. When you were a kid you hated the idea of rearranging your closet. You would just shove all your belongings into the closet where they would stay in a giant ball until you're mom would come to do laundry and yell at you. Now that you grow older, you almost view a closet as your only personal space in the whole house. We prize our walkin closets for their room and ability to hold all of our clothing. We update our existing closets with custom solid wood shelving, and redo our garage every few years with shelving systems and free standing cabinets.
The reason why we love our Closets is two fold: 1) bigger closets mean more space to keep everything neat and tidy; and 2) closets are where we keep our most cherished items. One of the reasons why you move into a new house is because you outgrew the old one. We tend to buy new stuff so that it matches the new decor of the house. But because our old stuff hold's memories we can't bare to throw it away. This is what Closets are for: keeping our old stuff so that we don't have to part with it. Sure, you're never going to use that old spice rack again, but that was the first thing you bought together as a couple.

Chances are you Closets at home need a little bit of cleaning. As an adult we have come to cherish these moments. This means going through our old stuff and reminiscing. If the childhood version of you could see you smiling as you sort through your old stuff he just wouldn't understand. |
